What do I do if I break down, especially in the desert?

If you have to phone AWN you will be put through to a call centre where, at there fingertips, they will be able to find the nearest workshop who is reliable and won’t over charge.

Lets face it - unfortunately there is a lot of mechanics out there who seem to think that the poor backpacker has lots of money (due to exchange rates) and are very willing to exploit the poor traveller, especially in a desert, where there might not be another workshop for hundreds of miles.
