It is known as being a real life sanctuary for many wild animals and just being in the park is a wonderful experience. In the spring, an amazing carpet of wild flowers comes to life once the snow capped mountains melt away. In the spring/summer bush walking and great mountain biking becomes very popular as well as horse trekking and white water rafting as well. In the winter, the whole area is transformed and it becomes a winter wonderland with some of the best ski fields in Australia!
The next stop is Jindabyne – which is located on the eastern edge of the National Park, and is a useful base to explore this vast area of national parklands. In the middle of the summer or during the ski season when this area can get busy, staying at Jindabyne is a cheaper option than staying in Thredbo or Perisher Valley. Perisher Valley – at 1680 metres, it is the largest resort in the southern hemisphere and also includes the areas of Guthega, Smiggin Holes, and Mount Blue Cow https://www.perisher.com.au
Thredbo – an Alpine style mountain village that feels like it should be in Europe not Australia! The chairlifts stay open in the summer for mountain bikers, so you don’t have to pedal back up the mountains!
Charlotte Pass/Mount Selwyn – starting point for the big alpine walks which includes a 12km one way walk to the highest point in Australia! The Alpine Way – this is a 100km scenic route between Golburn to Albany which is a great drive and a brilliant way to get a feeling of how big this national park really
Yarrangobilly Caves – These have lots of stalagmites and stalactites with unusual names such as ‘the wedding cake’ and the ‘judges wig’ just to name two. There are a number of caves to explore, so it’s worth spending some time in the area. If you feel like relaxing, then why not jump into the 27c thermal pool and melt away your worries!
After you have spent a few days or weeks in this area, you have to make another decision on which route to take, you can go one of three ways :
1. IF YOU ARE SHORT OF TIME – cross Charlotte’s pass and you can follow part of the Murray River back to Albury and head down the Hume Highway. This is the least picturesque route, but if you are short of time, then this is the quickest way back to Melbourne or Sydney depending on which direction you are travelling in. Personally this route cuts out a lot of beautiful places, so only do this route if you are short of time.
2. DOUBLE BACK AND HEAD FOR THE COAST – you can back track and head back to the pacific coastline and follow it around to Marlo. We would suggest stopping at a number of fantastic beaches along the ‘Sapphire coast’ and why not have a look at some of the national parks along the way such as, Ben Boyd, Croajingolong (excellent choice for a couple of days on a beautiful beach relaxing) or Cape Conran National Parks.
Cape Conran National Park – where the Snowy River meets the sea, it’s a great place for fishing, beautiful beaches, and lovely walks.
3. TRAVEL WHEELS RECOMMENDATION, GO OVER THE MOUNTAINS TO MARLO
This is our choice, travel over the mountains and take in some fantastic scenery as you drive from Jindabyne over the Mackillop Range through the Snowy National Park, Gelantipy, Bucan and eventually dropping from the mountains back to the Marlo and then on to the coast to Cape Conran for a sea view as you camp after a great day’s traversing the mountains in NSW.
Sydney to Melbourne campervan itinerary visit Wilsons Promontory
Travelwheels campervans recommends visiting Wilsons Promontory in Victoria. This is a great place to explore in a campervan hire holiday and lots of great walks and plenty of amazing Australian wildlife for you to check out.
Visit Wilson’s Promontory with travelwheels campervans
This is when things can really get exciting as we now slowly making our way toward Wilson’s Promontory via Lakes Entrance and the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park. Lakes entrance marks the start of the Gippsland Coastal National Park with a ninety mile beach and very long and thin sand dunes that are still relatively unspoilt to this day. However to fully appreciate this park, you need a boat as it’s the only way to really explore this area, so it’s time to jump back in to the campervan on your way down south!
Wild Koalas at Raymond Island – don’t forget to stop at Raymond Island as it’s a special place for wildlife and is known as being one of the most concentrated wild populations of Koalas in Australia! Metung – if Koalas are not your thing then Metung which is situated on a peninsula on the lake and is a popular destination for those who want a waterside lifestyle. http://www.metung.com
Our suggestion now would be to take a slightly more direct line heading towards Wilson’s Promontory National Park as you are in for a real treat and you are going to need a few days here to appreciate its sheer beauty. Without a doubt, this is one of Victoria’s top destinations; imagine stunning mountains covered in native forests running right down to beautiful white sandy beaches and to accompany this there are the sounds of the rivers as they make their way down to join the sea.
This is a special place and another favourite of the Travel Wheels team. It’s also a fantastic place to see wild wombats, and they are such lovely animals, it’s well worth walking in the bush and trying to find them, however they might end up find you instead!
