Why buy a Roof Top Tent Camper to explore Australia?

Roof Top Tent Camper for sale - photo showing customer from Europe who bought two roof top tent 4x4s to explore Australia on a budget from Travelwheels Campervans in Sydney

We asked some of our customers who have bought Roof Top Tent Campers from Travelwheels over the years to say why they decided to buy one.  You are always welcome to contact us and ask any questions before you arrive in Australia.

Our team have all extensively travelled around Australia.  Maxi is originally from Germany, so you are welcome to contact us in Deutsch.  If you are already in Australia and have a burning question or need any help, please call Shaun on 0421101021, and he will happily answer any of your questions.

Below is a summary of some of the comments and fees that stack up in your favour if you decided to buy your own roof top tent camper.

We bought a Roof Top Tent Camper  instead of hostel-hopping – best East Coast move on a budget

Roof Top Tent Camper for Sale in Sydney – Model shown is a Subaru Outback Automatic Station Wagon AWD with Roof Top Tent - photo shows the rear driver side angle view with the roof top tent open to get a good night sleep

We did the classic East Coast of Australia (Sydney → Cairns holiday, with plenty of detours) and chose to buy a used roof top tent camper rather than book dorm beds every night. It was the right call: way cheaper overall, way more freedom, and we reached places most hostel itineraries can’t touch.  You have the freedom to stop where you want, and not follow a strict itinerary you get if you book a coach or bus tour along the east coast.

Why it made sense for our budget to buy a roof top tent camper

  • No nightly bed fees: Hostel dorms often run ~$35–$60 per person/night on the coast. Over a couple of months that adds up fast. We mostly stayed at free/low-cost camps and a handful of national-park sites.

  • Our real numbers (example): We bought a tidy diesel AWD, kept up basic servicing, then sold it at the end of the trip.

    • Purchase: AUD $12,500

    • Basic maintenance/rego/odds & ends: ~$500

    • Resale: AUD $10,500 – note we were in a rush to sell as had flights booked to go to New Zealand.

    • Net vehicle cost: ~$2,500 total (we split between four = ~$625each for our transport and accommodation).
Add fuel + food + camps and it still beat months of hostel beds by a mile.

  • Food savings: A $30 hostel night + eating out vs. supermarket meals on a camp stove = huge difference. We cooked 80% of the time.

Freedom you don’t get with hostels

  • Choose your own pace: No check-in times, no “must move on” vibe. We stayed longer where the vibe was good.

  • 4WD-only access: With the right permits and tide checks, places like K’gari (Fraser Island) become unforgettable. We also used the 4×4 to reach quieter beach camps and out-of-the-way national parks.

  • Social (but on your terms): We still met loads of travellers at campgrounds, day tours, and trailheads—just without paying for bunks, and those fixed pick up and drop off bus tours.

Why choose a roof top tent camper?

There are lot of reasons for choosing to buy a roof top tent camper than a traditional campervan or a 4×4 with a simple mattress in the back.  First of all it drives like a normal car, and you have all that storage space in the back for your gear. Sleeping up higher from the ground is safer and more secure.  Here are some of the comments by our customers on why they liked a roof top tent camper to explore Australia”

  • “Drives like a normal car: Park easily in towns and supermarkets. Smooth on long highways, and saves fuel compared to big campervan.”

  • “Sleep up high: Off the ground and away from snakes, spiders and other Aussie critters. Zip the mesh windows closed and relax at night.”

  • “Go further for less: Explore quiet beaches, national parks and outback tracks that most travellers skip if on the traditional bus tours up the East Coast.”

  • “Set up fast: Open the tent, climb the ladder, and your bedroom is ready in minutes.”

Drives like a car, and also sleeps like a camper!

Roof Top Tent Camper for Sale in Sydney – Model shown is a Subaru Outback Automatic Station Wagon AWD with Roof Top Tent - photo showing the view sitting in the driver seat looking out of the windscreen

One of main benefits of this Roof Top Tent Camper is that it drives like a normal car.  Australia is a vast country!  Some days you will be driving hundreds of kms on, so you vehicle needs to be safe, secure and comfortable on your backside and your back!  We originally went around Australia years ago in a classic VW Kombi that looked great, but did not have any air conditioning and the suspension was non existent haha!

Having a comfortable vehicle that drives more like a car with good suspension than a campervan is essential in Australia!  These Roof Top Tent Campers using the Subaru as the base model are ideal to explore Australia.  It drives more like a car, so good on those long drives and at the same time more fuel efficient.  At the end of a long day on the road, you pull up and open up the roof top tent and you are ready to relax.

“Private rooftop bedroom = zero stress camping”

“For us, buying a roof top tent camper was about security and privacy. Higher vantage point, fewer chances to meet spiders, scorpions and snakes up on the roof of the camper!   The tent had proper zip-away ‘front door’ and side mesh panels that opened to let air in and at the same time keep our privacy at night without inviting insects in. Loved that we could tuck away at free/low-cost camps and still feel safe – car locked, ladder up, tent zipped. As a couple, it felt like our own room on wheels – no shared walls, no midnight corridor noise, just us and the stars. We’d pick this over a ground tent or staying in hostels every time.”

“Backpacker Lap Winner”

“We bought a used Subaru Outback AWD for our big lap and it was the best budget call. Roomy wagon = mattress in the back and the roof top tent was the perfect solution for us.  It cruised highways, handled dirt and corrugations, and sipped fuel compared to a big bulky campervan or giant 4×4.  Parts and servicing were easy to find in country towns. We split costs four ways and the total outlay beat months of hostel beds.  Zero dramas in 12,000 km—just oil, filters and tyres. Sold it in Sydney (easier to sell as way more people start their trip to Oz in Sydney) and got most of our money back. Would 100% do it again.”

“Our private room on wheels—safe, comfy, and affordable”

We wanted our own space (no dorms!), so we set up the back of our Subaru Outback as a mobile kitchen and luggage storage with the Roof Top Tent to sleep in at night time.  It felt like a private room on wheels – quiet, cozy, and totally ours. We slept together comfortably, locked the doors, and felt safe in national-park and council camps.

The AWD kept us confident on wet gravel and beach access roads whilst exploring Australia at our own pace.  Cooking simple dinners by the tailgate became our favourite thing to do to relax after seeing all those wonderful things together.  It was way, way, way cheaper than private rooms in Hostel which cost an absolute fortune!

“Sydney > Melbourne > Experance > Broome + Ayres Rock + back to Sydney”

“We did Sydney → Melbourne → Esperance → Broome → Ayres Rock → Outback route back to Sydney in peak heat and storms!  The Outback didn’t flinch: stable in crosswinds, planted on wet bitumen, and felt composed on outback trails and sand when we dropped tyre pressures. We carried two spares, a compressor, and a simple tool kit.

Travelwheels fitted a second battery to charge up our phones, cameras, drones, laptops, and to power the sound system when parked up chilling.    If you’re after doing the big loop and want reliability without breaking your bank or your back buying a big old 4×4 boneshaker, this Subaru Outback with a roof tent is the ticket.”

“Safety first, romance second, savings always”

“We are a couple from Germany and this trip was our first big adventure away from Germany.  We want a very safe car, and good privacy as we were travelling together as a couple.   We bought a Roof Top Tent Camper from Travelwheels as we were able to test drive it for a whole weekend before making the final decision to buy it.

The Subaru station wagon felt comfortable and secure on the highway, had strong brakes, and great lights for late arrivals. At night, we we slept in the roof top tent and it has fly screen curtains we could open to still have privacy and temperature control – perfect for sleeping together without feeling exposed by other people.

We cooked most meals, tracked fuel with a shared spreadsheet, and saw our daily costs drop below hostel + eating-out totals. Best part? The fun detours: rainforest boardwalks after rain, hidden lookouts down gravel lanes, and early beach swims because our bed was already there. It’s the most cost-efficient way we’ve found to travel Australia without sacrificing comfort or intimacy as a couple.”

“Buy good quality 4×4 and sell after our adventure was the plan”

Our plan was simple: buy, do the big lap around Australia and then sell it on and use the money for our New Zealand adventure afterwards. We looked online and didn’t feel comfortable buying a used 4×4 from a private seller.  Decided to go to a dealer and we ended up at Travelwheels.

The staff were super friendly and the lady in the office even spoke German as our English is not good!  We ended up choosing a well-serviced Subaru Outback AWD Roof Top Tent Camper for reliability and resale demand. After 14,500 km touring the whole way around Australia, we returned back to Sydney to sell the Subaru.

We kept receipts, cleaned it up, took good photos, and listed it online and sold it in a week. When we did the math, our “net vehicle cost” was less than a month of hostel beds for two. If you’re on a tight budget, and have the cash to invest in a good vehicle, then buying is the best choice to see the whole country—not just the backpacker trail that everyone else is doing!”.

“Romantic, elevated, and built for Aussie wildlife”

“We swapped hostel bunks for a roof top tent camper and never looked back.  Sleeping off the ground felt instantly safer – no rustling by the swag, no surprise visitors. We wanted a cost-efficient setup that still felt secure, and the roof tent nailed it big time! Sleeping above ground kept us calm in snake/spider country, and the hardy canvas + bug screens gave real peace of mind.

It’s surprisingly private for couples – once you zip everything shut , it’s just you two with a sky full of stars! We liked the solid mounting (no wobble) to the roof, the quick pack-down for early starts, and the extra security of being in the vehicle if we needed it in the outback.”
