In Australia you can buy four different types of petrol: there is regular unleaded petrol, unleaded petrol with 10% ethanol, premium unleaded petrol and diesel.

Remember in the outback it is not as easy to get the petrol in these rural areas! The petrol stations on the countryside will charge up to $2 Australian Dollars and more per litre unleaded. The petrol stations in urban and coastal areas charge at the moment about $1.40 Australian Dollars per litre for unleaded petrol. Diesel is more expensive than petrol in Australia, at the moment the price is around $1.55 Australian Dollars per litre.

Here is another tip from Travelwheels campervan hire is to go shopping at the supermarket! You can even save more money on diesel or petrol when you buy your groceries at Coles or Woolworths as you will get a discount voucher in the bottom of the receipt.
Each supermarket chain has these vouchers, so you can save up to 10c for Litre! Remember Australia is a big country and you can easily drive 20,000kms! If you save 10c per litre that is a big saving!

Let’s go back to the original question for this blog post for travelwheels car sales. In our opinion you should go for Petrol. Diesel is a bit more expensive, but I know you get more kms/miles per litre/gallon! However if you go to rural Australia Disel is not as readily available as Petrol. Also sometimes Diesel engine parts can be hard to find in remote places in Australia. Therefore Travelwheels recommends going for a Petrol engine.
